Following your dental treatment, proper home care is essential for optimal healing and recovery. These instructions will help ensure the best possible outcome from your dental procedure and minimize any discomfort you may experience.

First 24-48 Hours After Treatment
Immediate Care
Keep gauze in place with firm, constant pressure. Avoid talking, eating, or drinking until numbness subsides completely.
Initial Recovery
Some bleeding is normal. Replace gauze every 30-45 minutes if needed. Take prescribed pain medication as directed.
Next Day Care
Gently rinse with warm salt water. Begin eating soft foods. Avoid the treatment area when brushing.
Continued Healing
Resume normal oral hygiene carefully. Gradually return to regular diet as comfort allows.
Specific Care Instructions
Managing Bleeding
- Bite down firmly on gauze for 30-45 minutes
- Replace gauze if bleeding continues
- Avoid spitting, rinsing, or using straws
- Keep head elevated when lying down
- If bleeding persists, contact our office
Swelling Control
- Apply ice packs for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off
- Use ice for the first 24-48 hours only
- After 48 hours, switch to warm compresses
- Sleep with head elevated on extra pillows
- Peak swelling typically occurs day 2-3
Pain Management
- Take prescribed medications as directed
- Don't exceed recommended dosages
- Take with food to prevent stomach upset
- Over-the-counter options: Ibuprofen or Tylenol
- Contact us if pain worsens after day 3
Diet Guidelines
- Start with liquids and soft foods
- Avoid hot foods and beverages initially
- Chew on the opposite side
- Gradually return to normal diet
- Stay hydrated with plenty of fluids
Oral Hygiene
- Avoid brushing treatment area for 24 hours
- Rinse gently with warm salt water after 24 hours
- Resume gentle brushing after 48 hours
- Use soft-bristled toothbrush
- Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting
Activity Restrictions
- No smoking for at least 48 hours
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours
- Don't use straws for 48 hours
- Avoid alcohol while taking medications
- Rest and limit physical activity
